Why he volunteers: I first got involved with Club Rainbow as a medical volunteer in Camp Rainbow 2008, and this first contact opened up my mind to seeing how much more I could be doing outside my daily job as a doctor. Being part of Club Rainbow has given me this unique opportunity to work with so many other kids and families and to do my bit for the society.

Why he volunteers: In my clinical work I have been treating children with chronic diseases, providing medical treatment and advice to them and their families. My involvement with Club Rainbow has given me a deeper insight to how these children face up to the challenges of their medical conditions, and continue to grow and lead fulfilling lives. Their stories inspire me and make me a better doctor and person. It is an honour for me to be part of this charity whose commitment is to render holistic assistance and support to these amazing children and their families.

The dinner, which was fully sponsored by Hotel Fort Canning, was graced by Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence and his wife A/Prof Ivy Ng.

That night’s programmes include stage performances by recipients of Talent Development Fund and an Art Exhibition.

ARTitude is an extension of the Talent Development Fund, sharing the same objective of recognising and nurturing the various talents of the Rainbow children and youths, and to encourage them to develop their budding talent or gift and pursue their passion. This year’s concert at the University Cultural Centre featured eight recipients of the Talent Development Fund. For the first time ever, the annual ARTitude Concert was combined with Camp Rainbow’s Closing Ceremony, where the adventurous campers together with their befrienders and volunteers opened the show with an edgy mass dance number and closed with an acapella song “Lion Sleeps Tonight”.

The engaging Rainbow performances included a high-energy K-Pop/Hip-Hop dance routine by the Boom Boom Kids, melodious piano recitals, inspiring ballet performance, captivating Flamenco number and entertaining pop songs by the Rainbow Ukulele band, Uke’Ohana! The 700-strong audience were also blown away by the special guest performers – Kelvin Kew with Lila Drums (West African Drumming School), the comical Singapella (Acapella group), funky instrumental performance by drummer Ethan Ong, the melodious Spring Chorale, passionate dancers from Saltare Beats and the talented band from The Academy of Rock.

Club Rainbow would like to express our gratitude to all who made this event possible: our partner, NUS Department of Social Work, the volunteer instructors who shared their love for music and dance with the children, guest performers and concert volunteers. It was truly an exhilarating night to celebrate the dreams and passion of the talented Rainbow children and youth!

Why he volunteers: I volunteer because I can and I should. I have received many blessings in my life, especially my 3 healthy and active daughters. It is my wish that I can share my blessings.  I have started as a donor to Club Rainbow but recently felt that I should contribute more as a council member. I look forward to use whatever skills I have to make the life a little better for both the kids in need and their parents.

Club Rainbow beneficiaries had a wildly creative time attending a camp from Kids Invent!® organised by American Institute of Innovation & Entrepreneurship, LLC (AIIE) The camp provides a unique blend of education and invention activities that ignite children’s natural curiosity, challenging them to be creative, problem-solve and apply their ideas into creations.

7 Benefits for the Children

• Develop tactile & co-ordination skills by building mock-ups

The children were divided into groups and were given basic materials such as cereal boxes, milk cartons, straws, clothes pegs etc. Each group was given challenges to build parachutes, rockets etc and only allowed to use the given materials. The children exhibited amazing amount of creativity with their ideas. They also learnt to improvise their strategies and concepts with their innovative critical thinking.

Kids Invent! challenges our children’s creativity and innovative abilities. It reinforces the wildly creative learning.

The concert at DBS Auditorium featured six Rainbow recipients of the Talent Development Fund (TDF); a grant set up in 2005 to recognise and nurture the various talents of the Rainbow children and youths, and to encourage them to develop their budding talent or gift. The engaging Rainbow performances included high-energy hip hop and modern jazz dance routines, melodious piano and keyboard recitals, and entertaining pop and rap song numbers! The 500-strong audience was also captivated by the adorable K-Pop dancers from Nissi Childcare, angelic voices of the SCGS Choir, funky instrumental tunes by Agent of Freedom, and euphonious slow rock tunes by Kah Leng & Friends.

It was truly an exhilarating night to celebrate the dreams and passion of the talented Rainbow performers! “I couldn’t bear to leave the DBS Auditorium after the concert ended. I hope there is an ARTitude Concert next year in 2012! I can’t wait! J” exclaimed Wan Ting, 13 years old, a Club Rainbow beneficiary.
