Royce Tai: Drawing Strength Through Every Stroke
Spot the adorable creature illustrations in Reach for Rainbow 2026’s logo and event collaterals? These are the work of 19-year-old Royce Tai, young artist of Club Rainbow (Singapore)! Reach for Rainbow, rebranded from Ride & Ralk for Rainbows, is Club Rainbow’s annual signature fundraising event—one that rallies the community to uplift children with chronic illnesses and their families.
For Royce, art has always been a constant. From a young age, he found joy in doodling, a simple pastime that gradually grew into a deeper passion. In secondary school, Art became one of the subjects he took, and he further explored his creativity through calligraphy as his co-curricular activity. Determined to refine his skills, Royce went on to train at ART:DIS, where he learnt fine art, and later studied digital animation at ITE College Central. He continues to attend weekly animation classes with Studio Mui, steadily building on his craft. Later this year, Royce will begin a new chapter at LASALLE College of the Arts, where he will pursue a Diploma in Animation—bringing him one step closer to his dream of becoming an illustrator.
Behind his journey is a quiet resilience. Royce lives with a chronic middle ear infection, with hearing in his left ear at about 30%. Every 2-3 months, he visits the Singapore General Hospital for treatment, which has become part of his routine. Yet, rather than holding him back, these experiences have shaped his perspective and inspired his art.
Royce joined Club Rainbow in 2017, after a referral from his otolaryngologist. Having seen his sister benefit from the organisation, his family was already familiar with the warmth and support it provides. Through workshops, activities, and the Talent Development Fund, Club Rainbow has supported Royce in both his artistic journey and personal growth. Moreover, opportunities to take on commissioned work have also helped him strengthen his skills and confidence.
Being commissioned to create illustrations for Reach for Rainbow was a meaningful milestone. Royce felt honoured to contribute through his art, knowing that his work could help support other children and families facing chronic conditions. His creations—playful, expressive, and full of character—are inspired by his love for doodling and animation, as well as his lived experiences navigating a long-term medical condition.
Looking ahead, Royce hopes to carve out a future as an illustrator, telling stories through his art and continuing to grow in the field he loves.
To families of children who are aspiring artists while facing similar challenges, Royce shares a simple but heartfelt message: stay positive, and never give up.
