International Nurses Day (12 May 2025): Michelle's Journey in Nursing

This International Nurses Day, we celebrate the unwavering dedication of nurses who touch lives beyond the hospital walls. One such inspiring individual is Michelle Thia, a Paediatric Advanced Practice Nurse in the Emergency Department and a long-time volunteer with Club Rainbow (Singapore).

From a young age, Michelle was drawn to healthcare – but it was the ability to make a direct impact on people's lives that solidified her decision to become a nurse. “The combination of science, critical thinking, and human connection makes this profession incredibly meaningful,” she shares. “Seeing the resilience of children and their families facing health challenges inspires me daily.”

Michelle’s journey with Club Rainbow began nearly two decades ago when a medical colleague invited her to volunteer as a nurse for Camp Rainbow (a medically-supervised, three-day, two-night residential camp for Club Rainbow's children). Since then, she has played a pivotal role in supporting children with chronic illnesses and their families. As the overall nurse-in-charge, she oversees medical logistics, procurement of supplies, and ensures a strong medical team is in place for annual events like Camp Rainbow and the Club Rainbow Family Retreat.

Volunteering with Club Rainbow has been a deeply fulfilling experience for Michelle. “It allows me to extend my nursing expertise beyond the hospital, supporting children with chronic illnesses in a holistic way,” she explains. Through this journey, she has witnessed the power of community support and the importance of long-term care in children’s well-being.

Among her many memorable experiences, one stands out – a young girl who initially struggled with taking her medication in front of others due to embarrassment. During Camp Rainbow, she refused to take her insulin injection, perceiving it as shameful. “Over time, through counselling and encouragement, she gained confidence and began to view her medication routine in a positive light,” Michelle recalls. “Seeing that transformation in a child’s attitude towards her condition and treatment is one of the most fulfilling aspects of volunteering.”

Despite the rewards, being a volunteer nurse comes with its challenges too. Balancing professional responsibilities with volunteer work requires effective time management and self-care. Additionally, the emotional toll of working with children facing chronic illnesses can be heavy, especially when some lose their battle over time. “To cope, I focus on the positive impact I can make and lean on my support system, including my spouse and fellow volunteers,” she says.

For Michelle, International Nurses Day is a time to honour the resilience and compassion of nurses worldwide. “It’s a reminder of the invaluable role we play in healthcare and the impact we have on patients’ lives. It’s also a day to reflect on continuous learning, advocacy, and supporting one another in this profession.”

To her fellow nurses, she shares a heartfelt message: “Thank you for your unwavering dedication and compassion. Your work changes lives every day, even in ways you may not immediately see. Take pride in your role, support each other, and never forget the reason you chose this profession. Keep making a difference, one patient at a time!”

This International Nurses Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to Michelle and all the nurses who go above and beyond to care for others. Your dedication is truly inspiring, and the world is a better place because of you.
