Nurses’ Day (1 August 2026) - Caring Beyond the Hospital Walls: Linda Ang’s Journey of Compassion and Community
For Paediatric Intensive Care nurse Linda Ang, caring for children goes beyond the walls of the hospital. Driven by a passion to support critically ill children and their families, Linda has dedicated her career to providing comfort, hope, and compassionate care during some of life’s most challenging moments.
Beyond her role as a nurse, Linda is also a volunteer with Club Rainbow (Singapore), where she supports children and youths with chronic illnesses and their families. Through both her profession and volunteer journey, she has witnessed the resilience of children and the importance of standing alongside families through every step of their journey.
“I have always been drawn to helping others and making a positive difference in people’s lives,” Linda shares. “Nursing allows me to combine compassion, knowledge, and skills to provide care and comfort during some of the most difficult moments families face.”
Her motivation as a nurse comes from the meaningful connections she builds with patients and their families. Seeing children recover, grow stronger, and knowing that she has played a part in their journey continues to inspire her every day.
A Journey of Service with Club Rainbow
Linda’s journey with Club Rainbow began before the COVID-19 pandemic, when she first volunteered as a befriender for Camp Rainbow — a medically supervised 3D2N stay-in camp for children with chronic illnesses.
Through spending time with the children and their families, Linda gained a deeper understanding of the challenges they face beyond their medical conditions. She saw first-hand that support extends beyond treatment — it is also about creating meaningful experiences, building confidence, and reminding families that they are not alone.
“These experiences were both humbling and inspiring, and they strengthened my desire to contribute more meaningfully,” Linda shares.
With her nursing background and passion for supporting children, Linda later took on the role of a volunteer nurse with Club Rainbow, where she could combine her professional expertise with her heart for service.
Supporting Children Beyond Medical Care
For Linda, volunteering with Club Rainbow has been an incredibly meaningful and rewarding experience. Through her interactions with children and families, she has witnessed incredible resilience, courage, and strength.
“The experience has deepened my understanding of their challenges and reinforced the importance of providing support that extends beyond medical care,” she shares.
One of her most memorable moments has been witnessing the growth and confidence of children over time — from a child who was once shy becoming more engaged and independent, to hearing parents share how supported they feel through their journey.
“The genuine smiles, achievements, and relationships built with the families are moments I treasure,” Linda says.
These experiences have reminded Linda that even the smallest acts of encouragement and support can leave a lasting impact.
Finding Balance Through Purpose
Balancing volunteer commitments with work and personal responsibilities can be challenging. For Linda, supporting families also means understanding the emotional and social challenges they may face alongside their medical journeys.
She navigates these challenges through open communication, working closely with the Club Rainbow team, and continually learning how to better support children and families while remaining present and empathetic.
Her journey as both a nurse and volunteer reflects the shared purpose that connects both roles — being there for others when they need it most.
Celebrating Nurses Who Make a Difference
As Nurses’ Day approaches, Linda reflects on what the occasion means to her.
“Nurses’ Day is a time to celebrate the dedication, compassion, and contributions of nurses everywhere. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the privilege of caring for others and the impact nurses have on patients, families, and communities.”
To her fellow nurses, Linda shares a heartfelt message of appreciation:
“Thank you for your unwavering dedication, compassion, and resilience. Every act of care, no matter how small it may seem, makes a difference in someone’s life. Continue to inspire hope, advocate for your patients, and support one another. Happy Nurses’ Day to all my fellow nurses — you are truly making a difference every day.”
Through her work in the hospital and her service with Club Rainbow, Linda continues to show that nursing is more than a profession — it is a commitment to bringing comfort, strength, and hope to those who need it most.
